Shiatsu is a traditional form of therapy from Japan. By balancing the flow of energy in the meridians, Shiatsu can relieve many conditions, help prevent the build-up of stress, and restore vitality and well-being. Literally translated as ‘finger pressure’, Shiatsu uses comfortable pressure from the thumbs and palms applied to the energy channels and points in the body. Given through loose, comfortable clothing, Shiatsu may also include gentle stretches and rotations of the limbs and joints.

Your Shiatsu Session
A Shiatsu treatment takes approximately one hour. Extra time will be needed on the first visit so that a detailed case history can be taken. The Shiatsu practitioner uses a variety of techniques to determine which energy pathways (meridians) in the body are blocked and which are depleted or low in energy.
The treatment usually takes place on a padded mat or futon on the floor. However, if the floor is not suitable for you, the treatment may be given in a chair or on a plinth. Following the treatment, recommendations may be given on gentle exercise and changes to lifestyle or dietary patterns to support health and well-being.

Q. Do I have to be sick before I can book a Shiatsu treatment?
A. No. A regular Shiatsu treatment is a good way to prevent health problems arising. Many people choose Shiatsu just because they enjoy it and it helps them to stay well.
Q. Can I have Shiatsu while taking medication?
A. Yes, as Shiatsu is body and energy balancing. Clients should inform their practitioner of any current medication intake.
Q. Are there any times when Shiatsu may not be appropriate?
A. Shiatsu practitioners are specifically trained to recognise when Shiatsu may not be appropriate. It is not a matter of saying “Don’t have Shiatsu if you have this or that condition”. The best thing is to chat with your chosen practitioner on the phone before booking a treatment.
